Yurei: Ghosts of Japanese Folklore
When someone dies a tragic death, or isn't given a proper burial, that soul becames a yurei. They haunt family and friends to take care of unfinished buisness or seek revenge.
Yurei look exactly the same when they were alive but are dressed all in white. They wear a traditional funeral attire: a plain kimono or one inscribed with prayers and triangular piece of paper or cloth tied to their forehead. Yurei have no feet so they float around.
A well known yurei is Okiku, a maid entrusted with ten golden plates by her samurai master Aoyama Tessan. Tessan was attracted to Okiku but she did not love him back. He hid one of the plates and when it was found missing, Tessan offered to forgive the loss of it if Okiku would return his affections. She refused and Tessan killed Okiku and tossed her body into a well (sadako!
joke ) every night from then on, her yurei would come out of the well and count from "one" to "nine". Instead of counting "ten" she would let out an unearthly wail. Tessan was eventually driven mad by this nightly ritual. A neighbor finally exorcised the yurei by waiting for Okiku to count to "nine" then yelling, "Ten!" She then screamed and dissapeared
Yuri ( Wedding Peach ) cosplays as Okiku, complete with plates, and Sakura ( Hyper Police ) feels like Okiku, because no matter how many times she counts her tail she comes up short.
Next time, I'll talk about Yuki-Onna
So stay tuned
